The First National Monument dedicated to an African American and the First National Monument dedicated to a Non-President

The George Washington Carver National Monument was established on July 14, 1943 by President Frederick D. Roosevelt in Newton County, Missouri near the city of Diamond at the 210 acre boyhood farm were George Washignton Carver was raised. The monument was the first national monument dedicated to an African American and the first national monument dedicated to a non-president when it was established. President Roosevelt donated $30,000 to found the monument in 1943.

George Washington Carver

The park was meant to honor the life and legacy of George Washington Carver, the world renown scientist, botanist, educator, agronomist, chemist and inventor. Time magazine actually called him the “Black Leonardo Da Vinci”. One of the many reasons this site was chosen, outside of it being his birthplace, was because the rolling hills, woodlands, and prairies helped develop a love of nature and a yearning to understand nature in a young George Washington Carver. It was this curiosity and love that initially propelled him towards the path of greatness.

Below you will find photos of three famous areas and/or sculptures within the national park: George Washington Carver’s birth site, a statue of a young boy Carver, and a George Washington Carver talking bust. The birth site is located on the Carver Trail. This trail is 3/4 mile long and on it you can view the boy Carver statue, the birth site and many other historical areas located at the park. Along the trail, you will also find numerous historical plaques which provide images of and inspiring quotes by George Washington Carver. The Boy Carver Statue was created by Robert Amendola in 1960. This sculpture was designed to show a young George Washington Carver sitting and wondering about the beauties of nature. The talking bust will actually recite a poem by Edward Guest entitled “Equipment” in George Washington Carver’s own voice.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Emancipation Memorial is located in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, D.C. in Lincoln Park where North Carolina and Massachusetts Avenues cross and in between 13th and 11th Streets NE. It was constructed in 1973 and dedicated in 1974 by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. while Dr. Dorothy Height was serving as it’s President. The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. raised the 150,000 dollars necessary to erect the monument over a period of 13 years. At the time of it’s construction, this monument was the first to honor an African American in Washington, D.C.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.blackartdepot.com/mary-mcleod-bethune-art.htm" rel="nofollow" 0="target=_blank">
Dorothy Height, Shirley Ceasar, Coretta Scott King, Charles Rangel & Pres.
The sculptor for this monument was none other than the famous bronze sculptor Robert Berks. Robert Berks has created more than a dozen monuments and more than three hundred portraits in bronze. The monument is consturcted out of bronze on a base made out of aggregate concrete and containing bronze plaques. The sculpture measures 10 ft. (height) x 15.5 ft. (length) x 9 ft. (width) and the base measures 6 ft. (height) x 25 ft. (length) x 20 ft. (width).

Mary McLeod Bethune’s Emancipation Memorial consists of Mary McLeod Bethune standing with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s cane in her right hand, a scroll in her left hand and two young African American children around her. The children’s arms are extended and Mary McLeod Bethune is giving them the scroll. This scroll represents her “Legacy of Learning” which she is passing on to the children.

The inscription on the monument comes from Mary McLeod Bethune’s Last Will and Testament. It reads as follows:

I leave you love. • I leave you hope. • I leave you the challenge of developing confidence in one another. • I leave you a thirst for education. • I leave you a respect for the use of power. • I leave you faith. • I leave you racial dignity. • I leave you also a desire to live harmoniously with your fellow man. • I leave you finally a responsibility to our young people.

Featuring never before known information about the legendary activist that was acquired by the author’s interviews with Malcolm X’s security team and inner circle, over 4,000 pages of information secured from the US Government due to the Freedom of Information Act, diaries and letters. This biography is easily the most researched book on Malcolm X bar none and sheds new insight on his assasination, relationship with his wife, meetings with organizations as diverse as the Klu Klux Klan to the PLO, and other factors that led to his departure from the Nation of Islam.

It’s unfortunate that Manning Marable died shortly before the release of his opus and seminal work.
