From October 18, 2012 until December 31, 2012, the African-American Museum of Philadelphia will host an installation of found object sculpture by Christopher Carter. The exhibit, “Stalwart”, features sculptures and assemblages made from 19th century wood, metal, leather, found objects and other foreign materials. Chris Carter uses his craft to connect with audiences and to speak about political, social and personal narratives from a different perspective or vantage point. This twenty piece exhibit of kinetic and interactive sculpture represents ideas that the artist has wrestled with since 2003. Inspired by his African-American, Native American and European ancestry as well as his personal journeys while dealing with conflict, hidden meanings and the treatment of the earth, he considers this exhibit a part of a new genre of sculpture and one that he plans to continue to develop and explore.
This slide show features some of the sculpture in this powerful new exhibit at the African-American Museum in Philadelphia and the sculptor Chris Carter during one of his Artist Talk sessions.
