Maurice Barboza deserves to be applauded for his commitment in getting a monument in Washington, D.C. recognizing all those of African descent that participated in the American Revolutionary War. This month he made another step forward when President Barack Obama signed a bill that authorized the National Mall Liberty Fund to set up a memorial near the historic National Mall. The project initially gained momentum after Barboza was able to identify the names of 5,000 black patriots. He estimates that 5,000 to 10,000 actually volunteered to serve as soldiers and sailors during the war.
